Well, I mean... its true. Perhaps Mercedes would worry about if the market refused to buy their cars with the stupid thrown on things, but it’s been a cost effective solution for decades so why should they change. My guess is it’s almost a selling point/tradition for them at this point.

Eh. It’s always just a US thing. It depends how much they want to redesign the car to fit US regulations.
The car is perfectly fine in countries such as the UK, Germany, Italy, China, Japan, Australia and NZ, Canada I should think, and probably a hundred other markets as well.
It’s 1 country with these stupid laws, and if the citizens of that country have to suffer, maybe Merc just doesn’t really care.

I actually like Mack a lot. I hope Jalopnik drafts him in the first round when he graduates college. His articles were well written and funny.

Ye’, but it’s just a North American only thing.
Why should car companies spend so much R&D on something just for two possibly three countries?
Hell Ford aren’t even going to sell the Fiesta and Focus in North America so why should a foreign company invest more than they need to to make it compliant for such a small number of countries with a small number of sales?
Also the U.S. who brought in the dumb rule have such lax vehicle inspections they can simply remove them, what police force, etc... is going to know any different, it’s Canada following the U.S. silly rule that have inspections.

Why spend money to ruin the design of a car just for only * one country* ?
Does that make sense to you?

Worrying about a couple of little “bumps” when the EU pedestrian impact regulations have basically ruined the looks of every car on the market is... well, let’s just say he sounds like every other 12 year old who thinks pretending to be a self loathing American makes him sound smart.

Wow, I thought that ended in the 70's. Though that garden edging on the back they’re protecting doesn’t help the looks much either.
